Exploring Silence: A Contemporary Mime Workshop

MC

Mihai Călinescu

Actor and physical theatre instructor

In today's noisy world, silence becomes the most powerful form of communication. This workshop was a journey into the essence of non-verbal expression.

For three days, 15 participants ventured beyond words, exploring the fundamental principles of classical mime and how they can be reinvented in the context of contemporary theatre.

Workshop Materials and Resources

Exercises and Practiced Sequences

  • The illusion of the object: Working with imaginary objects and creating credible volumes in space.
  • Walk-against-the-wind: The classic technique of walking against the wind, adapted for emotional storytelling.
  • The neutral mask and emotional transition: Moving from one state to another using only bodily intention.

The focus was on movement quality and clarity of intention. Every gesture, every pause, was examined not as a trick, but as a letter in the body's own alphabet.

"The stage does not need words when the body knows how to speak. Mime is the poetry of this language."

The end of the workshop was marked by an informal presentation where each participant had the opportunity to synthesize their personal attempts into a mini-narrative sequence. The energy in the studio was one of deep concentration and authentic discovery.

Next Steps

This workshop laid the foundation for an ongoing series of meetings dedicated to physical theatre. Next, we will explore themes such as the body in relation to architectural space and the internal rhythm of movement.
